What has been the most challenging part of your job recently? And, have you made any changes to try and solve some of those issues?

The most challenging part of my job at the moment is trying to make a real and positive impact on the corporate wellness issues that we are witnessing today in the United States. There needs to be some immediate and necessary changes to the way we treat healthcare and preventative care is the first step. I want to be on the forefront of that process and help educate individuals about the effectiveness of small healthy changes in their everyday lifestyle. We all have the ability to become happier, healthier and more productive. It is the responsibility of corporate america to help us do so through changing the unintentionally unhealthy work environments that we have all been accustomed to. The difficulty is getting everyone on board and my job is to be that facilitator.

What have been the most important steps in your life (schools, jobs, etc.) that have led you to where you are today?

Live life to the fullest and family always comes first are two things that I revolve my dreams and aspirations around. My extended family is from, and still lives in New Zealand. I had the amazing experience to work for Jones Lang LaSalle in corporate real estate sales and development in Auckland, NZ after graduating from business school. By being in another country and learning the ways of a different culture, I was able to learn more about myself than I could ever imagine. I realized that I need close personal relationships to make me thrive in an ever changing work environment. Enjoy every moment of life just for the sake of being alive.

Many people who work within the FM world have to act as ‘leaders’ in their jobs.  What do you think makes a good leader, and have you done anything recently that has made you a leader?

A good leader is a good listener. You must understand the perspective of those around you and be open to change if it may be beneficial for the whole and not just for individual gains. A leader must serve as a role model and act accordingly in every aspect of their working and personal lives. I thrive on making people around me more productive and improving their lifestyle choices in and out of the workplace. To truly accomplish a substantial positive impact on your friends, family and colleagues one must learn to be a role model for healthy living and realize the impact one has on those around them. Happier, healthier individuals make more productive and less costly employees.

A year from now, what will you have hoped to accomplish, professionally or personally?

I hope to learn more about improving the lifestyle choices and health of employees on a national level. I hope to be called a “leader” from what I defined it as earlier. I hope to develop a network of contacts in the Chicago area that help reform the way we look at healthcare and mold preventative care into something that is mandatory in our corporate culture. Everyone needs to be educated on the opportunities that lie ahead and how small changes now can make big positive changes later. Financial impacts of implementing a wellness programs can be easily offset by making each employee more loyal, productive, healthy and just happier overall. I teach by example and love to share my insights and experiences. EAT WELL AND PROSPER.
