Community Service
The Community Service Committee has been very busy with several projects (see below). In addition, committee brochures have been created and mailed to all members describing activities and soliciting new members to help out on various projects.
The Chicago Chapter of IFMA's Community Services Committee invite you to participate in a great summer activity! We have partnered with Christ the King Jesuit H.S. ("CTK") to promote professional development to high school students. Click on the IFMA link below to read more about this event and about the school's history, mission and purpose.
Modeled after the Cristo-Rey concept, CTK makes possible the dream of a quality and affordable education for students whose families could not otherwise pay the tuition charged by private schools. Students earn three-quarters of their tuition costs while gaining valuable, life-changing skills and experience through jobs atChicago area companies. This model is based on an innovative partnership between urban education and the business community that started in Chicago ten years ago.
How can IFMA help? CTK is in need of volunteers to assist in the training of its incoming freshman class. The training sessions are scheduled for August 10th, 12th and 17th at Dominican University in River Forest , IL . There are a variety of workshops which each require a team of 2 instructors. The team approach provides a format for both instruction and assistance as needed. The workshops are structured and intended to be interactive and two instructors add more to this format. The workshops generally consist of a PowerPoint presentation and handouts as appropriate. Each student will also have a manual with related materials for the various workshops. Class sizes will be 14-18 male and female students.
The students and staff will be dressed in formal business attire (dress shirts and ties for boys; appropriate formal business attire for girls). We want our students to understand that work is a different world with a different code of dress and behavior. We ask that all instructors wear formal business attire even if their work environment is business casual. Instructor orientation is planned for Friday, July 31 at 8:00 AM at Christ the King H.S. We will review protocol for greeting and addressing students as well as attendance taking, classroom management, workshop content questions, Dominican University logistics and other related topics. Please plan on attending this important introduction session.
To sign up, please use the instructor signup sheet and include the required information. Once completed, forward your information to Kathy Diebold @ kdiebold@istmanagement.com. Feel free to volunteer for as many workshops as you'd like. An sample calendar of how you can structure your time is attached. REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS JULY 27TH. This is a huge endeavor that will go a long way towards helping students get started in the work world. It will also provide a way for you to make an impact in the community and the lives of some very special young students. Please contact me for additional information. Thank you.
